I really enjoy speaking at conferences. I’ve been lucky enough to have quite a few chances to do that in all kinds of places around North America over the past few years. Back in 2013 I was the closing keynote speaker at the Gay Travel Canada conference in Victoria, BC where I spoke about using YouTube within the tourism industry to reach more LGBT Canadians. 4 years later I’ve returned to Victoria to speak at another conference about YouTube, but this time on ways small business owners and agencies can better use the platform within their marketing.

But this isn’t just any old business/marketing event. It’s actually the largest social media conference in Canada! Now in it’s 7th year, Social Media Camp brings together people from all over Canada, the US, and even overseas, to discuss, learn, and teach about all things social on the Internet.

Subjects covered included everything from overall strategy to live streaming, and it brings together hundreds of people who share an interest in the state of the web in 2017. My talk focused on YouTube marketing and what works best on that platform today compared to when I first started 10 years ago. Needless to say it’s changed quite a bit!

My favorite part of the conference though was the connections I made outside of the sessions. This is inevitably almost always the case when I go to these kinds of events. The subjects and speakers are interesting and I end up either learning new things or at least being reminded of stuff that I’ve forgotten about, but in between the sessions (and especially at the mixers afterwards) is really where I get the most value. I meet new people and get to talk to them one on one, we share ideas and thoughts we’ve had from the conference or our own experiences, and I always leave with a bunch of business cards and some new friends!

Later this month I’ll be doing another presentation on YouTube , this time at a conference in New York (for LGBT week), so I’m looking forward to sharing knowledge and research with the people there, but even more so I’m excited for the conversations I’ll have, the new connections I’ll make, and the beverages I’ll drink at the mixers! 😀
